A JADU or ADU can be a solution for children to live close to parents as they age or parents join their children, or building for a caregiver to live close but independently to aid aging parents who feel stronger staying where they are. Statistics show that the more independent a person can be, the better they age.

A garage or room conversion can be an independent ADU or communicating JADU depending on the needs of the family. It is a less expensive option to the backyard due to the existing building elements that can be reused or shared. If cost is not as large of a concern, the backyard ADU option with accessible walkways and entries can provide a solution that offers more privacy and separate yard space.
